October 18, 2012
Called to order at 7:38am.
Roll Call: John Doviak, Gus Janszen, Stiney Vonderhaar, Georgia Bergan, David Nichols, and Wayne Mosley. Pamela Meyers is on vacation, and Katie Touvelle is at school.
Recognition of visitor: Jennifer Shapiro and Amy Ash, Lifestyle Essentials
Motion to approve the minutes with one change was made by Georgia Bergan and seconded by Stiney Vonderhaar. Motion approved. (David asked for additional note be added under the value based discussion this would be done for one of our special events, as a test, such as Snow Much Fun.)
Additions to the Agenda: none
New Business:
1. Jennifer Shapiro and Amy Ash, Lifestyle Essentials (LE)
· Increase in the daily averages and in the Evendale 100 Challenge participation. The “100” had two winners which was a first - Marge Candy and Mike Flavin had both woken up early, finished their last miles, and were waiting to access the fitness center to log in their miles.
· New fitness center display will layout favorite Halloween candy, its calorie count and how long it will take to work the candy off. The display will also show healthy alternatives.
· Summer session went very well; only one class was cancelled because of low attendance, while Simply Fit came back and was well received. Simply Fit has added a Thursday class this Fall.
· Fall session: Free week at the beginning only added a few new registrants. Two classes have been cancelled because of attendance.
· A Maintain/Don’t Gain Challenge will take place November 1 – February 28.
· Wellness Expo being explored for 2013.
Old Business
1. Lifestyle Essentials’ Monthly Report – as noted in the packet. Still a concern about the evening LE staff not interacting with patrons enough.
2. Evendale Bike Master Plan update
· David is meeting with Kristen Maiden, Jason Ramler from URS, Stiney Vonderhaar, and Michele Gottschlich today at 9:00am to discuss plans
· Blue Ash is developing the airport property and several trails have been designated; great prospects if we can connect to this project. Blue Ash is building, and residents are using the trail; we should follow this thinking with our prospective trails project.
· David is adding funds to the capital project fund each year; so if we should ask for grant monies, we would have funds in place to match, if needed. As road projects are planned in the village, the hope is to add or designate bike lines as part of those projects.
3. Soccer Uniforms
Gus thinks we should also buy shorts then add an additional cost of registration and allowing people to keep the shorts. The older kids could also just use a t-shirt that they could keep, since they are the roughest and probably least likely to return the uniforms.
4. Soccer Field #3
The field will be core aerated, top dressed, and slit seeded at the end of the soccer season. Gus will assemble a proposal for lengthening this field.
5. Facility Hours
· A concern was raised by staff, recently, that only one staff person is in the building from 9:30-10:00pm weeknights. So, David ordered the main lobby doors to be locked at 9:30pm and patrons to use their membership card to access the center through the south entry doors. This will allow the building and grounds attendant to monitor just one half of the building. The police department was also asked, if possible, to patrol the area during this time.
· A review of fitness center entry data shows few people entering the building during this time. Additionally, David contacted neighboring community centers, and found many of them close at 8:00pm or 9:00pm during the week.
· Georgia, Pamela, and David are meeting November 8th to review operational hours for 2013. David is considering proposing we close at 9:30pm year round during the week.
Director’s Report
· David pulled 2012 full facility, fitness, and pool membership information and the data (per the 2010 census) shows approximately 52% of our households have a full facility membership.
· A new belt has been ordered for the Aquagator. If this last piece does not put the equipment back online then it will be removed from service permanently. (Everyone, including the manufacturer, is out of ideas.) [Update: the Aquagator is working well.]
Phi Lambda Pi Report
· Attendance is between 20 – 25 members each week.
· Michele Hirnikel and Amanda Puthoff won the Fresh Meat competition.
· Haunted House preparations are underway.
· New members continue to join.
· Entertainment Books continue to be sold by the teens.
Open Discussion
· The Halloween Fest on Saturday will have two wagons again; one from Gorman and one hired from an outside source.
· Town Meeting is Sunday, November 11th at 5:00pm. Instead of data, maybe a testimonial, or two, about how the center has helped someone could be given. David and Stiney are looking for ideas.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:40am by Stiney Vonderhaar; seconded by Wayne Mosley. Motion approved.
